About Mike Fulson

Mike Fulson

by: Mike Fulson  /  Artist, Tech Guy, German son!

So... a quick, little bit about me?

I was born the youngest of two, and then became the middle of three.

As a middle brotherPulling from the Fulson archives of the 80's

Growing up, I enjoyed the arts of music and drawing. That eventually landed me working as a web designer and quasi-coder. In that latest capacity, I've been behind the scenes here on this website for years now.

But now I've been invited to become an active participant and share from my 18 + 18 + 11 years of experience enjoying German cuisine!

18 + 18 + 11 is Not Math

Well, technically it is... however, in relation to my lifetime experience enjoying German cuisine, I spent my first 18 years completely immersed in it, and the next 18 years enjoying the same dishes I grew up with, but only during special and regular visits home.

Then, 11 years ago, for health reasons, I switched over to a fully plant-based diet. Goodbye, meat! Sayonara, butter & dairy! Auf Wiedersehen, cheese and eggs!

But that didn't spell the end of enjoying German meals, oh no!

Thanks to my mom & my wife's ingenuity, I can still enjoy many vegan and vegan-ized German dishes

But Looking Back...

Here are some of my favorites from memory lane.

Potato Pancakes

Without a doubt, my favorite meal was potato pancakes. Sprinkled (ahem... liberally!) with sugar, they were my first thought when asked what special meal I'd like for my birthday.

We were all warned that the house would smell from all the frying and we had all the fans going and windows open to air out the house... but I secretly wished that delicious scent would hang around for a loooong time after the meal was done. :)

Flatladen

Flatladen was definitely one of my favorites. Since I was a sucker for the traditional rouladen, what became known as flatladen at our house became even more popular because it was quicker and easier to make... meaning we had it more often!

Brown Bread

That's what we all called it. For the purposes of this site, it's "German Sourdough No Knead Bread". It was our staple bread in the house -- amazing when freshly baked, and soooo good when cooled!

Perfect for making a meatloaf sandwich with ketchup the next day.

Wait, There's More?

I'd hate to leave it there without honorable mentions of red cabbage and cheese cake, however this was just supposed to be a lil' bit about me, and I think that's mission accomplished.

So I'll be around here, writing up quick tips that you'll see in the Kleine Knabbereien (Little Nibbles) newsletter, and may even pop in a recipe or two of my own. :)

Until then and for now, cheers!

Mike
