by: Sylvie Fulson / Oma Gerhild's daughter-in-law and plant-based cook
Hi, I’m Sylvie, Oma Gerhild’s daughter-in-law. I create vegan German recipes by turning classic German dishes into plant-based comfort food. 😋
Sylvie FulsonIf you grew up on German food, or married into it like I did, you know how special so many of these dishes are—the tradition, the culture, the comfort. As part of the Fulson family, I enjoyed and cherished traditional German meals for almost two decades before switching to a plant-based diet in 2013.
That’s why I was excited when Oma Gerhild challenged me to experiment and create vegan versions of some of our most beloved German recipes.
When I first switched to a vegan diet, I discovered a whole new way of cooking that was so creative and so much fun—not to mention delicious and satisfying. I learned different ways to incorporate nuts, seeds, beans, and grains into amazing dishes, including “cheesy” sauces and “meaty” meals—perfect for creating German-style favorites.
One of my most recent and exciting discoveries has been learning how to make seitan (SAY-tan). It’s made using vital wheat gluten (flour made from wheat protein) mixed with everyday pantry ingredients to mimic different types of meat. Hello vegan Königsberger Klopse mit Soße and Rinderflatladen!
Needless to say, it’s been a delicious journey for both me and my husband—fellow plant-based eater and German food lover—and it’s been a joy to carry on some of those food traditions with our son.
These recipes are for you if:
If any of the above describes your situation, then you’ve come to the right place!
Some recipes are originals based on German-style cooking, while others are vegan versions of traditional dishes.
Certainly, plant-based versions of authentic German cuisine won’t be exactly the same, but here’s what you can expect from each recipe:
Check out the ever-growing list of vegan German recipes —delicious, easy-to-make, and sure-to-please plant-based dishes that you’ll come back to again and again.
You’ll notice that many of the recipes are Oma’s, since quite a few traditional German recipes are naturally (or accidentally) vegan.
Here are a few of my favorites:
