by: Gerhild Fulson / Oma Gerhild shares German recipes rooted in family tradition.
Sometimes you just want the kind of food that feels familiar. A bowl of hearty soup, tender dumplings, a favorite German dinner, or something sweet that reminds you of home.
That’s what my Comfort Foods cookbook is all about.
These are the recipes I turn to when I want something satisfying without making dinner complicated. They’re traditional German favorites made with practical ingredients and straightforward instructions, so you can enjoy the flavors you remember even if you live far from Germany.
German comfort food comes in many forms. Sometimes it’s a steaming bowl of lentil soup. Sometimes it’s beef roulades with potato dumplings and gravy. And sometimes it’s a warm piece of plum cake with vanilla sauce.
This cookbook brings those familiar dishes together in one collection, with recipes for soups, main dishes, hearty sides, dumplings, and desserts.
Inside you’ll find favorites such as:
There’s a special emphasis on dumplings and satisfying side dishes, because sometimes those are the very best part of a German meal.
Comfort Foods was made for everyday home cooking, whether you grew up eating German food or you’re discovering these dishes for the first time.
You’ll find:
You don’t need a special occasion to make German comfort food. Pick a soup for a cold evening, make dumplings for Sunday dinner, or treat yourself to a favorite dessert simply because it sounds good.
Some of my favorite food memories are tied to the simplest meals.
When my family immigrated to Canada, my Mutti had to learn how to recreate the German dishes she knew using the ingredients available in her new home. Those recipes became part of our family life, and many of those same comforting flavors are the ones I still love today.
That’s the feeling I wanted to share in Comfort Foods.
These are hearty German dishes made for real kitchens and real families. Some may remind you of something your Mutti or Oma once made. Others may become new favorites at your own table.
Choose the format that works best for you and enjoy bringing a little German comfort food to your own kitchen.
It doesn't need to be difficult or complicated. Keeping it quick and simple is my motto!
Comfort food is served.
Tschüss!
