How to Cook Ham in Slow Cooker – Oma's gekochter Schinken
Learn how to cook ham, gekochter Schinken, using a slow cooker. It's so quick to prepare and is so wonderfully deliciously tender with great flavor and extremely moist. Absolutely PERFECT!
And, that leftover ham bone? Lentil soup, of course!

Makes 8 servings + leftovers
Ingredients:
- 6 - 8 pounds (2.7 - 3.6 kg) ham (smoked pork picnic shoulder)
- 1 cup (240 ml) apple juice
- 1 tablespoon (15 g) German mustard
- 1 tablespoon (15 g) honey
- freshly ground pepper
Instructions:
- Trim fat from ham if necessary to fit into slow cooker.
- Put ham into slow cooker.
- Mix apple juice, mustard, and honey. Pour over ham.
- Grind some pepper over top of ham.
- Cover and cook on low for about 6 hours. See hints below.
- Remove ham and serve sliced.
Notes/Hints:
- My slow cooker's low setting is very low. I need to use a low-medium setting. Follow the instructions that came with your cooker and see the recipes that are also included. Choose a similar setting for a similar recipe.
- This ham is wonderful served alongside some German-inspired scalloped potatoes.
- Use the bone and bits of leftover ham for pea soup or lentil soup.
