Oma's Smoked Pork Chops  (Kassler)

These smoked pork chops (kassler) are my quick go-to for a hearty dinners ... so easy, and they taste like home!

Most German delis will have this ... it's a type of smoked pork loin chops. Can't find that? Check the hints for alternatives.

Servings:

Makes 4 servings

Ingredients:

  • 4 smoked pork chops (Kassler)
  • oil and/or butter to fry

Instructions:

  1. Heat oil and/or butter, about 2 tablespoons in a fry pan.
  2. Over medium heat, lightly brown Kasseler chops on both sides.
  3. Serve and enjoy. Great with German mustard, potatoes, and vegetables.

Notes/Hints:

  •  A thick piece of boneless cooked ham would work, although not quite the same flavor. You may want to try different brands to find one that tastes "just right".
  • A similar flavor can be had by using a thick piece of Canadian peameal bacon. Again, these are just substitutes for the real thing.
  • Try any European deli and see if they carry this. I've found Kassler in a Polish deli, a Dutch deli, and, of course, a German one. It may not be labelled as such, but try anything that's labeled as smoked pork chops, or cured and smoked chops. You may just be pleasantly surprised.
