Mutti's German Herring Salad with Cream (Heringssalat)

My Mutti's Herring Salad is such an easy dish to make for a perfect quick supper. Our kids LOVE this! Really. It's creamy and sweet and sour! (And, you can turn it into a wonderful buffet dish.)

Makes 4 servings

Ingredients:

  • 1 jar (about 500 milliliters) pickled herring, drained (see hints below) 
  • ½ cup (120 grams) sour cream, plus more if needed
  • 3 - 4 dill pickles, sliced (optional)
  • fresh dill, to garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Cut the herring into bite-sized pieces, if needed, and place in a bowl.
  2. Stir in the sour cream. Add more if needed.
  3. Add the pickle slices and stir.
  4. Sprinkle with fresh dill.
  5. Serve immediately or refrigerate until needed.

Notes/Hints:

  • Add some sliced pickled beets for color.
  • I usually use "Herring Fillets in Wine Marinade".
  • Use low fat sour cream or plain yogurt.
  • Sprinkle with fresh dill.
  • Add some chopped apples.
